RL Grime - Run for Your Life (Interlude)
background
this is dance design for a class project. this song from RL Grime has been
in my mind and i want to create a dance costume design for it. it gives me a sense of how running river water on a hill is. It keeps going forward and changes every time when it passes a certain point. Water keeps its own pace running down the river, however, with the help of wind, it moves quicker, like how the pace in the song changes. The idea of this design is to present an image of river water flowing down the hill and its nature aspects
process
i start off by listening to the music over and over to imagine some movement from the melody and rhythm. then, i look up imagines for my mood palette to get inspirations on lines, textures, colors, and movement. i edited the mood palette so that it is the colors that i want the design to be. i also created a sensory collage which i gather materials to build an object that helps me to visualize some elements that i would like to try to create on my design. moving on, i do more research on movements, fabrications, colors, and silhouettes to help my design process.
challenges
the music has different tempo changes in a very short time while having three cues limited the number of looks that can be created. however, because there are only three cues, it allows me to carefully plan and think deeply about when and where the next cue should be and how to utilize the limited changes for a maximum outcome to design for this music.
design
the choice of using blue satin fabric in the front and back gives a high contrast of shininess that presents the reflection of water. the side panels are made from sheer chiffon that is in a wash of light blue and lavender to create a lighter flowing of water to the piece. it allows dancers to create big movements and showcase a different aspect of river water. the color corresponds to the mood palette and sensory collage which shows a dreamy vibe. the blue, wavy line pattern on the dress is noticeable but not overwhelming on the panels to present the idea of the organic movement of water affected by wind speed. moreover, the edge of lines on the pattern presents an image of clouds in the sky. the length of the dress gives volume to the piece that indicates the power of water. the hair is half braided with blue flower clips that symbolize a cycle of nature. river water will eventually go to the ocean and evaporate to clouds and anticipate on the hill.
